The yellow film every spring

If you own a pool in Madison, Ridgeland or Gluckstadt, you know the week the pines let go. A yellow-green film covers the water, rings the tile line and piles up in the skimmer. Pollen is fine enough to slip through some filters, it clouds the water, and it adds organic material that eats up chlorine. People often mistake it for mustard algae, but pollen floats and skims off, while algae clings to the walls. Here's how Royal Pool Pros handles it.

How to keep up with it

Skim more often than usual during peak pollen, daily if you can. Empty the skimmer and pump baskets often so circulation stays strong, and brush the tile line where the film collects. Keep a close eye on filter pressure, because pollen loads a filter fast. When pressure climbs 8 to 10 psi above clean, it's time to backwash or clean the cartridge.

Keep chlorine at the upper end of the range while the pollen is heavy, since all that organic material burns through it. A clarifier can help the filter catch the finest particles. Once the pollen passes, a good vacuum and filter cleaning resets the pool for summer.

  • ■Skim daily during peak pollen
  • ■Empty baskets often
  • ■Brush the tile line
  • ■Watch filter pressure and clean it when it climbs
  • ■Keep chlorine toward the high end of range
